Damage Noted

Overall a neglected cemetery. At some point it had a fine block wall erected around it with steps to enter and leave and offer protection. It is shaded by a very large old tree, that effectively provides shade which aids in the hindrance of much growth, it does no favors in terms of dropped limbs which likely have caused most or all of the broken stones.

Notes

Cemetery has been called Creed Cemetery. Creed was wounded at Todds Tavern during fighting near Spotsylvania in 1864. His military records indicate that he “fell into hands of enemies” after being wounded, and his records cease. Walker family letters indicate Creed, who was in the 2nd Virginia Cavalry, was in fact shot dead at this engagement. There was no indication found of him ever having been buried in Bedford, although his death was reported in 1864 to the Bedford Co courthouse. One would think that he would have had a military marker placed at the minimum had his body be recovered and removed back to Bedford.
